Alf is hoping our Commerce Minister, the splendid Simon Power, will whistle Mark Weldon across to the Beehive this week for a “please explain”.

Weldon, of course, is the Chief Executive of the NZX and was a member of the Capital Market Development Taskforce. The task force came up with a bundle of ideas for improving that bit of our financial system.

Last week, Power was saying the Government shared the taskforce’s view that capital markets are key to improving the financial wellbeing of all New Zealanders and a vital source of finance for business.

Lifting standards in the finance sector

Another blow has been struck on behalf of investors who lost their savings over the last two or so years thanks to the bum advice of financial advisers.

It won’t recover their lost savings, but it will give them the satisfaction (a scant one, maybe) of knowing future investors will be better protected.

The Securities Commission yesterday announced the beginning of consultation on skills required for financial advisers.

All people interested in the competency of financial advisers are invited to make submissions on the skills advisers will be required to have under a new law.

Feisty woman behind petition on finance flops

A very feisty battler against the wrongdoings of failed finance companies is the power behind a petition presented to Parliament today.

The petition – presented by Act MP John Boscawen – calls on the House of Representatives to support the establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate the finance companies crisis from May 2006.

Betcha there’s more than a modicum of public support for that proposal.
